Schools

Oxford’s schools, explained without the guesswork

School questions come up in almost every home search, and the answers in this area are easy to get wrong. Here is the accurate picture: Oxford runs its own public school district from pre-K through high school, and the neighboring Region 15 district serves Southbury and Middlebury.

Because experience matters.

Oxford Public Schools

A complete PK-12 district of your own

Oxford does not pay tuition to another town or share its high school. It operates four schools under the Oxford Board of Education, with the district office on Great Oak Road.

Quaker Farms School

Pre-K through Grade 2

The entry point for Oxford students, serving the town’s youngest learners.

Great Oak School

Grades 3 through 5

Oxford’s upper elementary school, formerly Oxford Center School, one step closer to the middle grades.

Oxford Middle School

Grades 6 through 8

The middle grades for Oxford students, formerly Great Oak Middle School, before the move to the high school.

Oxford High School

Grades 9 through 12

Opened in 2007 at 61 Quaker Farms Road, giving Oxford its own public high school.

Worth knowing

  • Oxford High School opened in 2007. Before that, Oxford students attended high school in a neighboring town, so the current PK-12 setup is still a fairly young one.
  • Because Oxford is a small district, class groups are small too, which many families say is exactly what they want.
  • For current calendars, bus routes, and registration, the district’s website (oxfordpublicschools.org) is the source of truth.

The neighboring district

Region 15: Pomperaug schools for Southbury and Middlebury

Region 15, the Pomperaug Regional School District, serves these two neighboring towns. It does not serve Oxford; Oxford has its own district. Families who choose Southbury homes are part of this regional system, which funnels to Pomperaug High School in Southbury.

Because Oxford borders Southbury, families often compare the two systems side by side. The practical difference: an Oxford address means Oxford Public Schools, while a Southbury address routes through Region 15 to Pomperaug High School.

What families ask

The questions that come up in every search

Does Oxford have its own high school?

Yes. Oxford High School at 61 Quaker Farms Road serves grades 9 through 12 and opened in 2007.

Is Oxford part of Region 15?

No. That is the most common mix-up in the area. Oxford has its own district; Region 15 serves Southbury and Middlebury.

Do buyers pick towns based on districts?

Constantly, which is why it pays to get this right before you set your search. Susan can show you the boundaries on a map during a consultation.

Are there private school options nearby?

Yes, several independent and parochial schools serve the region, from New Haven County and Fairfield County options. Susan can point you to them based on where you land.

"I have watched this district grow up."

As a resident for more than 50 years, I remember when Oxford families sent their kids out of town for high school. Today the town runs the whole path from pre-K to graduation, and I have sold homes to parents, and then to their children, in the same neighborhoods.
